What is IP telephony?

In IP telephony (VoIP), your telephone is connected directly to your high-speed Internet access rather than to a so-called land line. You have access to advanced telephony, flexible and much more affordable than traditional telephone service.

IP telephony combines the options of the portable telephone with the main advantage of the home telephone: stability. IP service adapts to any high-speed Internet service - DSL, cable or otherwise - regardless of location or Internet provider.

Examples of Long-Distance Calls

CASE No.1

You mail your gateway to your brother, who lives in Paris. You call each other.

Since you are both using an IP line in Quebec, your call is considered local.

This does not count as a long-distance call.

CASE No.2

You leave for Florida for 6 months. You bring your gateway with you and plug it in on American soil. You call Quebec.

Since you are calling from an IP line based in Quebec, your call is considered local.

This does not count as a long-distance call.

CASE No.3

You leave for Florida for 6 months. You bring your gateway with you and plug it in on American soil. You call your neighbour (in Florida).

You are calling an American number from a line based in Quebec. Even though you live only steps from your neighbour, your call is considered long-distance.

This counts as a long-distance call.
